Letting go

I did something different in a mediation last week: I decided to let the mediator direct the negotiations without interrupting or judging.  The mediation was going in a direction that at first I did not agree with and seemed to be making my client dig his heels in.  But, I kept quiet and, over the course of the afternoon came to consider that mediator was suggesting a solution that may be in the best interest of the children…let go of the legal battle.  Interestingly, by keeping quiet and letting go of my impulse to interject, I was able to open myself up to the possibility that the best interest of the children may be better served by walking away from our lawsuit….
